About Me

maureen summers

I completed a B.Sc in maths with the Open University in 1996 and then, already having Qualified Teacher Status from my earlier Certificate of Education. I began to teach GCSE Maths to adult 'returners' at Kensington and Chelsea College in West London. This gave me a wonderful insight into the kinds of problems that my students had met at school in their mathematical education and the types of things which affected their progress and, indeed, their confidence and enjoyment of the subject. I also had to develop many strategies to try to overcome these problems, particularly the lack of confidence and, in many cases, great dislike, of Maths! I am glad to say that all my students, over an 11 year period, not only did well in their exams but reported new understanding and liking for maths, appreciation of its beauty as well as a big boost in confidence.

In 2000, I also began to teach, part time, at Michael Hall School in Forest Row, again teaching the GCSE course, until 2007. During all those years and continuing, I also tutored individual students and have developed a great interest and enthusiasm for helping younger children 'put the puzzle together' and make a firm mathematical foundation for their future studies, as well as continuing to help students prepare for GCSE.

I think that the study of mathematics gives a beautiful extra dimension to our thinking and problem solving (not just maths problems!) and enriches our lives in ways that go far beyond the need to calculate in our everyday lives. I also believe that the more we understand and practise maths, the more FUN it becomes!

HOW I WORK & FEES

I love Maths! Maths is a beautiful and intriguing subject that has a great impact on the broadness of our thinking and the development of our brains as well as its purely functional aspects. In fact, these days we do not even need to be able to calculate very much because there are so many electronic calculating devices. However, the development of mathematical thinking and the appreciation of how numbers work helps us to think more logically and solve problems (of all kinds!) more easily in our jobs and our lives.

Of course, for children, the curriculum which develops their skill in mathematics leads eventually to important exams and the need to pass at a high enough level to get jobs and college places. This can be quite stressful for some children and when they do not feel confident the situation gets worse. If a child comes to me for extra maths lessons, my aim is to put the pieces of the puzzle together from the basics upwards, always with concern for helping them feel confident and positive and always trying to make it fun as well as hard work and to work towards a feeling that maths is an amazing and beautiful thing. If this can be achieved, doing well in tests and exams is a natural consequence.

HOMEWORK For younger children, I give personalised worksheets made after the lesson and posted or emailed the next day, based exactly on the lesson that we experienced together. They are encouraged to complete as much as possible before their next lesson but not to feel bad if they can't remember things...we will do it again until it feels familiar to them and gradually it becomes absorbed and skills are achieved. GCSE students will have homework consisting of various exam based questions and personal worksheets and practice papers as appropriate.

I hope this helps you to understand something of my approach. Please do not hesitate to e-mail or phone if you need to know more.

What my clients say

Here is what some parents have said about the maths tuition provided.

My two daughters have been to Maureen over the last few years and both found Maureen's approach to maths extremely helpful. Maureen has a wonderful way of boosting confidence that makes maths seem very straight forward. This approach was perfect for my children and has given them everything they need to continue to enjoy maths.

Parent, Forest row

My daughter was falling behind at school and needed to catch up. She didn't feel confident at all but with Maureen's help, this has changed. Now she is near the top of her class and is enjoying doing maths.

Parent, East Sussex

My son was very happy with his GCSE result as he had been extremely anxious about it until he had some extra tuition with Maureen. She helped him with his understanding of topics and showed him how to approach exam questions in a productive way. This all greatly improved his confidence.
